A Gem Ms. Le Chat I've been helped immensely just by reading the first chapter. I embrace the focus on living the Stoic philosophy, learning techniques to banish negative emotions and the distractions surrounding us in a consumer society which take me off the path to deciding what my "grand goal in living" is and staying focused on that goal every day. I had been dipping into Buddhism for years, loving aspects of it while feeling it just wasn't fitting my personality. avgvstvs said A Commendable Effort. I happen to be one of those "predisposed stoics" that Irvine describes in this book, and indeed have myself had an "on again, off again" relationship with Zen Buddhism. (Though I disagree with Irvine that it requires a "leap of faith.")This book is exactly what it says it is: a man's revival of an ancient philosophy with some of his reflections about its practical use. This book was a burning pageturner for me as I was slowly presented with a system. Fantastic- viewpoint altering book I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
