Ray BradburyAugust 22nd 1922 - June 5th, 2012When Ray Bradbury died reactions came from everywhere including from President Obama. Surprising to me, few mentioned the one of his works that meant so much to me and affected my life so deeply. While he was most known to the general public for his science fiction, I found his mostly autobiographical novel Dandelion Wine to be the most impactful. At the same time it best illustrated Bradbury’s incredible command of the language, his ability to stir the imagination, and the way in which he could open windows on life.I couldn’t count the number of times I would rerea. So beautiful. K. Spangler This was such a beautifully written book; the word usage was so rich. It's rare that I read a book that I love this much. Ray Bradbury is famous for his science fiction novels, but this story is a semi-autobiographical depiction of a summer experienced by two little boys.My favorite chapter was when Douglas spies the ultimate pair of tennis shoes in the window on the way home from a movie. The descriptions of the boy's feelings were such that I felt a longing to own the shoes as well. My heart beat so quickly when I experienced the crossing of the ravine with The Lonely One hot on the heels of Miss Lavinia. My heart ached. Desert Rat said From the perspective of age. Dandelion Wine takes us into the summer of 1928, and to all the wondrous and magical events in the life of a 12-year-old Midwestern boy named Douglas Spaulding. No walking dead or spaceships to Mars here. Yet those who wish to experience the unique magic of early Bradbury as a prose stylist should find Dandelion Wine most refreshing. This tender, openly affectionate story of a young man's voyage of discovery is certainly more mainstream than e
