DESCRIPTION:

Arriving at his fifth school in as many years, diplomat's son Osei Kokote knows he needs an ally if he is to survive his first day - so he's lucky to hit it off with Dee, the most popular girl in school. Peeking over the shoulders of four 11-year-olds - Osei, Dee, Ian, and his reluctant "girlfriend", Mimi - Tracy Chevalier's powerful drama of friends torn apart by jealousy, bullying, and betrayal will leave you reeling.. By the end of the day, the school and its key players - teachers and pupils alike - will never be the same again. But one student can't stand to witness this budding relationship: Ian decides to destroy the friendship between the black boy and the golden girl. The tragedy of Othello is transposed

"OTHELLO in Grade School" according to Roger Brunyate. Osei ("just call me O") is a new boy at his Washington DC school. The son of a Ghanaian diplomat, this is his fourth school in as many years. Somewhat incredibly—although this does seem to be set around 1970—he is the only black kid in the school. Handsome, athletic, and smart, he is an object of immediate interest, especially to popular, blond-haired Dee, who is assigned to help him through his first day. Soon O and Dee ("what a coincidence we are both letters") have paired up. Seeing her feel hi. legrau said What a disappointment! I have been devouring these books as quickly. What a disappointment! I have been devouring these books as quickly as they publish another in the series. I had as yet to be disappointed by any of them until I read this one. Now I really like Ms. Chevalier as an author, but the manner is which she sought to work with Othello just didn't work for me. In a 6th grade class?!. "Very good" according to rita. Very good. It's a very humble writing. Tracy Chevalier proved herself as an excellent writer again by making one Shakespeare plot contemporary for our times.
