"Five Stars" according to James Paul Sain. book. A Beautiful Book A Customer The moment you open this book you will feel inspired to work with wood in your home. It covers wooden building styles from medieval huts (still in existence from pre 1350 in Finland), through New England clapperboard, through log cabins and swiss chalets. These are enchanting enough, but the photographs of the interiors are fantastic. From deepest rustic, heavy hewn log interiors, to beautrifully painted 18th and 19th century wood panelled rooms. Its all in here.A celebration of wood. As a huge fan of . Note quite what I was expecting A Customer It is a good book, but based on the cover, the description and the other review, I was expecting more Arts & Crafts/Craftsman/Post & Beam/Greene & Greene/Frank Lloyd Wright/Mahady & Associates/etc. style homes and fewer Colonial/Log Cabin/Rustic homes. Wood can be used as further embellishment in the form of beautiful panellng or carved and turned banisters and staircases, and in original furniture designs. Indoors, wood surrounds us in so many different ways. Wood has always played an invaluable part in construction, architecture, and interior decoration and has long been valued for its practical benefits. Structural elements such as beams and vaulted ceilings become features in their own right. Wooden Houses places the wooden house into a historical, social and decorative context, explores the decorative potential of wood in our homes and provides inspiration for anyone who appreciates the beauty and soul of this wonderful natural material.Wooden houses range from rustic log cabins and timbered country cottages to traditional alpine chalets and elegant clapboard houses with shaded verandas. Whether it is left in its natural state to show the variety of grains and depths of colors, or used as a bare canvas for paint techniques, wood is a beautiful and timeless resource.

From Library Journal The warmth, textures, and versatility of wood as a building and decorating medium are vividly evoked in this lavishly illustrated work designed primarily for browsing and visual pleasure. Divided into four sections?styles, interior details, living with wood, and decorating?the text is light on history and stylistic analysis but robust on decorative schemes, description, and practical tips. The book concludes with a directory of organizations, architects, builders, and suppliers as well as an illustrated glossary. Miller, a prolific design author and cocreator of the "Miller's Price Guides" series, draws examples from northern Europe, the United States, and Australia. Clement, Univ.
