My family ranched in Southern Arizona for many years and we maintained a more-or-less non-aggression pact with “our” coyotes (the dismal economics of desert open-range cattle agriculture being by far the larger bar to success). I have served on the board of the University of Arizona Press which gave me access to very large natural history resources. Also exposed to the Tohono O'odham folklore surrounding the coyote (j. "We've been trying to wipe out coyotes for a century (at taxpayer expense). Coyotes now are in every state but Hawai'i." according to lyndonbrecht. Any book by Dan Flores is worth a read. There are a number of books on coyotes, but this one is the best overall I've read. Entertaining and enlightening read. Good natural history of North America's most fascinating critter. Amusing, amazing and well documented science. Great for young folks interested in sciences, Native American culture and fond of animals.
