As Ben Jonson once put it, "He was not of an age, but for all time." No other writer, in English or in any other language, can rival the appeal that Shakespeare has enjoyed around the world, and nobody's had a bigger influence. With Romeo & Juliet as relevant as ever today, get caught up quickly with this resourceful guide.. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and even whether the works attributed to him were written by others. His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His most famous play, and probably the most famous play in history, is Romeo and Juliet, the classic tragic love story between two members of rival families, and the result of the feud. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Indeed, his genius is questioned only by those who doubt the authenticity of his authorship of timeless classics like Romeo and Juliet. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. Good for students Christine N. Ethier A pretty good over view of Shakespeare's famous love story. The book includes an overall summary and act by act summary. While the analysis is not deep criticism, it does point students in directions and can be used to stir discusssions. Ideal for high school students.. Very informative An easy read. This guide did an excellent jib outlining themes and motifs. Character descriptions were exquisite. I would recommend this to anyone.
