There may very well be other books out there that preceded this in the genre, but this series established it on the map.This was the penultimate for those of us old guys and gals who grew up playing dungeons and dragons back when parents were fre. Bilbo Baggins, the unlikely hero, battled the wits of a fire breathing dragon and showed us how to live a happy life. The Hobbit is a marvellous fantasy and cautionary tale for readers of all ages. Entertaining yet instructional on how to live life to the full, honourably, meaningfully and enjoyably. Even for one like me who has past the half century mark.
