Shakespeare's sonnets are even more genius than time has given them credit. If I had to choose between Hamlet and The Sonnets it would be a very difficult choice. Shakespeare re-invented the sonnet, gave it a more mainstream structure. Each one tells a brief story, a super mini-play, an inner monologue, an ode to love, betrayal or wisdom, etc. I enjoy. How can anyone not love these? Paige Turner xxix, 29 When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyesI all alone beweep my outcast state,And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,And look upon myself, and curse my fate,Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,With what I most enjoy contented least;

. A real top-shelf edition.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Shakespeare is again the hottest ticket in town: he has been voted the person of the millennium in Great Britain, while an Oscar-nominated film about his love life is burning up box offices. This beautiful hardcover offers them all, with illustrations and an index of first lines. Along with being the world's greatest playwright, his unparalleled genius for rhyme and meter make him also one of the greatest poets, evidenced by the 154 sonnets he penned throughout his life

Gwynne Evans and Anthony Hecht also address the many questions that cast a veil of mystery over the genesis of the Sonnets: to what extent are they autobiographical? What is the nature of the 'love', strongly expressed, between the 'poet', the 'youth' and the 'Dark Lady'? Can they, apart from the poet, be identified? Who is the 'rival poet'? When were the Sonnets written and in what order? What were the circumstances surrounding their publication?. This new edition focuses on the Sonnets as poetry - sometimes strikingly individual poems, but often subtly interlinked in thematic, imagistic and other groupings
