Captivating Some writers have an almost poetic way of describing people and places and emotions and this one is as good as it gets. Every page makes you feel you are there, in the story, seeing and feeling what the characters are experiencing. Even the descriptions of the food they are cooking make you drool.Great story well told. Hated to have it end. This would make a great movie.. Connie said Hauntingly Beautiful. It is rare that a romance novel has you holding your breath as you read it. Right from the start we know something as happened to Carmela, the heroine, who no one in the family will talk about. Decades later, it is up to her niece Mina to see if she can resolve the mystery.Sara Alexander has done a brilliant job of creating three-dimensional characters who are passionate and flawed. Set in 1950's rural Sardinia, the location, culture, and especially the food play an important role. This is an interesting time in the island's history after WW II with the arrival of the American military lookin. Gorgeous -- Filled with food, love and beautiful landscapes! Fificat This was a lovely and suspenseful romance, and what ultimately happens to the protagonist, Carmela, isn't revealed until the very last page. The settings in 1950s Sardinia are spectacular. The cooking scenes, of which there are many, are special treats -- it's almost impossible to read this story on an empty stomach. A well structured, at times magical narrative through the ruins and mountains of Sardinia, with appealing but complex characters. Such a beautiful debut, and I look forward to more from this author.
